At the heart of Irthlingborough’s walking group is Maurice Reid, a dedicated walk leader who has helped bring people together through simple weekly walks.

Maurice recently shared how a special moment came about through the group. Wanting to spread the benefits of walking even further, he invited the Mayor to join one of their regular sessions. She accepted the invitation and quickly saw the value of what the group offers.

During the walk, she experienced both the calm of being outdoors and the positive impact on wellbeing. The natural surroundings and friendly atmosphere clearly made an impression. She captured photos along the way, showing the beauty of the routes and the spirit of the group.

These moments did not stop there. The Mayor later included some of these photos in a slideshow shown at her annual civic service held at St Peter’s Church in Irthlingborough. It was a chance to highlight the importance of community activities and the benefits they bring.

During the service, she also announced her Pride of Irthlingborough awards. Maurice was recognised for his efforts and commitment. He was presented with a certificate and a plant as a thank you for the difference he has made.

This story shows how something as simple as a weekly walk can have a wider impact. It brings people together, supports mental wellbeing, and even earns recognition at a town level. Maurice’s work is a great example of how small ideas can grow into something meaningful for the whole community.
