We've had a busy year!

Updated: Dec 14, 2023

Just some of our highlights.

Free swimming

The Free Swimming programme was delivered to anyone under the age of 18 across all five swimming pools in North Northamptonshire, running in Corby International Pool, Kettering Pool, The Nene Centre, Splash Leisure Pool and Waendel Pool.

Following on from the success of the free-swimming programme delivered throughout the October 2022 half term, February 2023 half term and Easter 2023 holidays, the final programme to conclude the first year of the project took place over four weeks in the Summer holidays of 2023. This brought the total to 40 days of free swimming offered from 2022-23.

The attendance over the Summer holidays scheme totaled 8146 participants including young people and adults, bringing the total attendances of the whole scheme to 15,956. This came to a 65% overall take up from the places offered by providers – which was great!

Overall, the Free Swimming scheme was a tremendous success, receiving high levels of positive feedback from both participants and staff. Parents expressed how grateful they were for the offer, particularly over the 4 weeks in the summer holidays! Additionally, parents stated that it was great to be able to take their children swimming with an alleviation of financial pressure. There was a lot of positive feedback from children who participated, all saying that they wanted to see the scheme again with lots of smiling faces that have been reflected in the photos taken! Thanks to the NNLeisure Team and partners Freedom Leisure and Places Leisure.

ACtive Families Fundays

North Northants Council - NN Leisure Team organised the FREE Active Communities Fundays, on the first four Wednesday’s in August across all 4 districts in North Northamptonshire.

• Wednesday 2nd August 2023 West Glebe Park - CORBY

• Wednesday 9th August 2023 Castlefields Park – WELLINGBOROUGH

• Wednesday 16th August 2023 North Park – KETTERING

• Wednesday 23rd August 2023 Spencer Park- RUSHDEN

The events saw a whopping 10,000+ children and adults attending, estimated at 3500 families. The aim of each funday was to provide ‘come and try’ sessions in a variety of sports and physical activities, promote wellbeing and bring the community together. Various local community groups and organisations also attended the event and held stalls or interactive games, which enabled them to signpost families onto any health and wellbeing services they required.

The parks were full of fun activities for all ages and abilities with many families bringing picnics and staying for the entire afternoon. Examples of activities on offer included; Trampolining, Table tennis, Water ‘Slip and Slides’, Circus Skills, Pedal Smoothie Maker, Basketball shootout, Football shootout, Soft Play, Swing-ball Mania, Crazy Golf, Water Tattoos, Balloon modelling and a Bubble station, all available free of charge.

The Police and Ambulance cars were very popular with the sirens and horns heard from one side of each field to the other! Each Funday also had a local Radio station with Corby Radio at the Corby event, Shire Sounds at Wellingborough and Kettering, and Beat Route Radio at Rushden. The Radios provided a fantastic atmosphere to each event.

A massive thank you to all of the 61 organisations who attended the fundays (including 19 different sports clubs), some of whom attending all 4 events. More thanks go to The Oakland Foundation for funding the events and to Northamptonshire Communities Fund (NCF) and the Friends of West Glebe Park for funding and supporting the Corby Funday.
