The Gathering 2026: Celebrating Swimming Success Across Local Schools

On Friday 19th June, Corby East Midlands International Pool will once again host The Gathering, a school swimming gala that brings together local primary schools to celebrate the achievements, skills and confidence children have developed through their school swimming lessons.

The event welcomes schools that participate in swimming lessons at the facility, providing pupils with an opportunity to showcase everything they have learned throughout the year. The gala features 20 competitive races, incorporating a variety of swimming strokes and aquatic skills that the children have been practising during their lessons. To conclude the day on a fun and exciting note, teams will take part in a float race, creating a fantastic atmosphere of teamwork and enjoyment.

The idea for The Gathering was first developed by a swimming instructor who wanted to create an event that would unite local school communities, celebrate children's achievements and inspire them to continue their swimming journey beyond the classroom. Since its inception, the event has become a highlight of the school swimming calendar.

The Gathering also aligns with Drowning Prevention Week, helping to reinforce vital water safety messages for all participants. Throughout the event, children are reminded of four key safety principles:

  • Stop and Think – Before entering the water, look for potential dangers and consider whether it is safe.

  • Stay Together – Never swim alone. Always stay with friends or family.

  • Call 999 – In an emergency, call for help. Never enter the water to attempt a rescue.

  • Float – If you find yourself in difficulty in the water, stay calm, float on your back and shout for help.

The first Gathering took place in 2024, welcoming eight local schools for a single morning session. The success of that event generated significant interest from other schools across North Northants. Today, The Gathering continues to expand, bringing even more young swimmers together to celebrate their progress and water safety knowledge.

The event also supports the work of Northamptonshire Sport through the School Games programme, enabling participating schools to log their attendance and earn valuable points towards their School Games achievements.

A key part of the event's success is the involvement of students from Brooke Weston Academy, who volunteer as part of their Young Leaders Qualification. Throughout the day, these young leaders assist with timekeeping, event organisation and participant encouragement. Their enthusiasm, confidence and positive energy play an important role in creating an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Every child who takes part receives a participation medal in recognition of their achievement and commitment.

Over the past two years, The Gathering has proven to be a tremendous success for NNLeisure, highlighting not only the swimming abilities of local children but also the importance of water safety education. The event provides a valuable opportunity for pupils, teachers and families to understand how to stay safe in and around water and what actions to take should someone find themselves in difficulty.

The team at Corby East Midlands International Pool is looking forward to welcoming schools back for The Gathering 2026 and celebrating another year of achievement, community spirit and a lifelong love of swimming.
