Six months ago, North Northants Leisure launched the We Can Move studio class, a gentle, supportive exercise programme designed for people affected by cancer. What began as a small group of six participants has grown into something far more meaningful: a community built on strength, confidence, and shared experience.
Each participant arrived with their own challenges. Moira described feeling unfit and unsure about getting back into exercise. Peter shared that he felt weak and lacked confidence. David struggled with a painful shoulder and general weakness, while Anne admitted she didn’t feel confident using the gym at all.
As the weeks went by, participants began noticing real changes. Moira found her mobility and strength returning, describing how much her back has improved since starting the class. David not only gained strength — his shoulder pain completely disappeared. Peter felt stronger, fitter, and more energised, experiencing improvements in stamina, confidence, and overall wellbeing. Even though Anne had only recently joined, she could already see that the programme would help her regain fitness and mobility.

But the physical improvements were only part of the story. The programme boosted confidence in ways many didn’t expect. Moira now looks forward to classes each week. David says his confidence is “great” again. Peter simply summed it up as “lots.” Anne believes that being part of the programme will help her stay motivated long-term.
Beyond the exercise itself, the group found comfort in being surrounded by others who understood what life after cancer can feel like. Moira especially valued the cup of tea and chat at the end of each session — a simple moment that brought people together and offered a safe space to share experiences. David appreciated being able to work at his own
pace while still being part of a supportive group.
Participants explored a range of activities, from the We Can Move class to EGym sessions, swimming, and using the gym. Some now use every activity available to them, a clear sign of growing confidence in their own abilities.
Anne captured the impact beautifully when she said that health professionals should be more proactive in encouraging people to join groups like this — because the benefits extend far beyond exercise.
Six months in, the We Can Move programme hasn’t just helped six people get stronger. It has helped them regain confidence, reduce pain, rebuild mobility, and rediscover enjoyment in movement. Just as importantly, it has created a space where people can support one another, celebrate small wins, and feel understood.
This is more than a fitness class.
It’s a community.
And for many, it’s the start of getting their lives back.
